French authorities will start intercepting small boats in English Channel following UK pressure
France has agreed to begin stopping small boats in the Channel, following months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift comes after the British leader wrote to the President urging him to support the plan and stating there currently "lack any effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to stop the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've collected their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have rarely acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is considered excessively high a risk to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we implement these tactics this month... We have no effective deterrent in the Channel waters."
Now, a French naval police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of nets to intercept boats, which had previously been reported as a possible technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a brief shift towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the former government official departed from office.
This was demonstrated in the summer month, preceding a summit between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were witnessed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French officials will once more be allowed to stop boats prior to they pick up migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the start of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be seeking ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
