Missing Johann Sebastian Bach Pieces Played for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years

Historical organ composition
Bach is considered to have created the two organ pieces at the start of his musical journey

Newly discovered organ works by the renowned composer Bach have been unveiled and played in the central European country for the premiere performance in over three centuries.

The nation's Cultural Affairs Minister the government representative called the discovery of the two pieces a "significant occasion for the musical community".

They first caught the attention of Peter Wollny in 1992 when he was documenting historical musical documents at the Brussels archive.

The musical compositions - the D minor Chaconne and G minor composition - were undated and unsigned. The scholar spent the next 30 years working to confirm the origin of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were played at the historic Leipzig church in Leipzig, where Bach is laid to rest and where he served as a church musician for twenty-seven years.

The two pieces were played by organist from the Netherlands Ton Koopman, who said he was proud to be able to present them for the premiere in three hundred twenty years.

He said the pieces were "of a very high quality" and would be "a valuable resource for modern musicians, as they are also suitable for more compact instruments".

Cultural Relevance

They are thought to have been written at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was employed as an organ instructor in the community of Arnstadt in the German region.

The researcher, who is now the director of the Bach research center in the city, said they demonstrated several characteristics unique to the musical genius.

"In terms of style, the pieces also include characteristics that can be found in Bach's works from that era, but not in those of other musicians," he said.

They are thought to have been recorded in 1705 by a student of Bach, the musical student.

At a unveiling of the pieces, the researcher said he was "99.99% sure that the composer had created the two pieces" and they have now been incorporated into the recognized inventory of his compositions.
