Monarch to Share Personal Statement on Illness in TV Broadcast

The Monarch has filmed a personal message regarding his experience with cancer, which will be broadcast as part of this year's fundraising initiative, spearheaded by medical research organisations and a television broadcaster.

Buckingham Palace said the King would discuss his "recovery journey" as a cancer patient, in a video message on Friday at 8pm UK time.

The address, taped inside Clarence House recently, will stress the critical nature of cancer screening checks to ensure more people catch the condition at an initial point.

This constitutes a rare update on the wellbeing of the Sovereign, who has been in a course of therapy since his condition was announced in early last year. Analysts suggest unlikely the King will specify his type of cancer.

Fundraising Central Purpose

The annual charity campaign each year collects money for medical research and therapies and urges people to get health assessments to boost the odds of an timely detection.

The King's candid approach about his illness, and living with cancer, has been designed to raise awareness and to get more people to get checked - and this will be advanced with this unusual personal contribution.

Up until now the King's main approach to his cancer has been to continue his schedule, maintaining a full diary despite his ongoing course of therapy, and he is understood not to have desired to be defined by his diagnosis.

The past twelve months has seen the King, 77, undertaking several foreign visits, such as visits to Italy and Canada, and hosting the highest tally of foreign dignitaries to the UK for a generation, including the German president in recent days.

Charity Evening Programme

The upcoming awareness broadcast on the network, featuring celebrities such as several TV personalities, will urge people not to be scared of getting cancer checks.

All three have been affected by cancer - one host disclosed last month she had received treatment for the disease, while Balding was diagnosed with the illness more than 15 years ago. Presenter Hills has previously discussed his parent, who had stomach cancer and then later leukaemia.

The programme will target the approximate nine million people in the UK who charities state are not up to date with national health programmes, with an website to let people check if they are qualified for tests for key health indicators.

In an effort to demystify screenings and demonstrate the benefit of early diagnosis there will be a live broadcast from treatment centres at Addenbrooke's and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

"My aim is to reduce the stigma surrounding health checks and demonstrate the public that they are not isolated in this," commented a presenter.

Understanding Health Checks

At present in the UK, there are several key national health screening services - for specific cancers - available to specific demographics.

A new scheme for lung health is also being slowly rolled out for anyone at high risk of being diagnosed with the condition, primarily aimed at people of a certain age, who currently smoke or have smoked in the past.

Male patients may request prostate cancer checks, but there is not a universal scheme currently available.

Charitable Impact

The fundraising campaign, which has generated £113m for many years, is funding dozens of clinical trials with many patients.

King Charles, in a statement for attendees at a reception for related organisations in April, had spoken of recognising the "daunting and at times frightening experience" for those diagnosed and their support networks.

But he noted his experience of living with cancer had shown him that "the darkest moments of illness can be alleviated by the kindness of others," as he commended those who supported cancer patients.

The Palace has not disclosed the nature of cancer the King has, or the therapies he has received. The King's cancer was identified after he had received a medical treatment.
