Teacher Killed and 25 Female Students Kidnapped in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The criminal group breached the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the start of the week, police confirmed.
The attackers "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and seizing the students from their hostel, authorities disclosed.
A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now receiving treatment.
Witnesses reported a large group of attackers, known locally as bandits, who appeared discharging weapons intermittently to create fear.
Local residents told reporters that the gunmen subsequently marched a contingent of young women into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "supplementary tactical squads, alongside military personnel and community security teams" to the area.
A coordinated search and rescue operation is underway in surrounding forests and potential getaway paths.
