Ahead of marking his sixth anniversary at the helm, Mikel Arteta has admitted that his longevity in North London is fundamentally dependent to delivering trophies.
The Journey So Far: Six Years in Charge
The former Arsenal captain assumed control on December 20th, 2019 and soon guided the team to an FA Cup victory a short time later. However, that early success stands as his sole top-tier trophy since succeeding Unai Emery.
“Yes,” the manager said upon being asked about his future past 2027. “But it’s about today. And a lot of things have to happen in the coming months as well to deserve that opportunity.”
This weekend sees the anniversary with a fixture against Everton, the identical team Arsenal met immediately following his appointment was announced.
Present Challenges
As trailing Manchester City set to face West Ham earlier in the day, Arsenal could be displaced first place in the Premier League before their own match begins. This comes even with Arteta presiding over a squad that has endured in excess of one hundred injury setbacks over the course of last season.
The manager is under a contract with a year and a half left on the deal he signed in 2024, however, he knows that he must deliver promptly.

The manager expanded, stressing the daily requirement to justify his role. “My belief is that a manager must deserve the right to be here tomorrow. And that’s how how you react, how you address the media, how you step into the dressing room, the signal you send.”
Arteta continued, praising the strong backing from the hierarchy, but pinpointing the squad's dedication as most crucial. “At the end, the critical component are those players... For six years, I’ve seen just players with a degree of commitment, desire to learn and give the maximum to the team.”

Even with the fitness woes and the immense scrutiny, Arteta believes the club's “priorities and messaging” are vastly different from when he began his reign.
He pointed to the squad's displays as evidence of progress. “You look at the performances, all the club records that were shattered... We still have yet to do that [win trophies]. But that tells you the standard we operate at.”
He finished by saying, “That is a level that the Premier League has never experienced in the past. And we want to achieve even higher goals. And if we do that, I think we are on the correct trajectory to winning.”
